Hair Transplant Surgery
A Completely Natural Solution
Depending on the needs and goals of the patient, hair transplant surgery at our Overland Park, KS, office can incorporate either follicular unit extraction (FUE) follicular unit or transplantation (FUT). During your consultation, the doctors will explain your options.
We utilize local anesthesia during surgery to make these procedures as comfortable as possible. We only perform one patient procedure per day, which allows us to provide a personalized level of care.
Thanks to Dr. Buchwach and Dr. Goldstein's expertise in follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE), you can achieve results that look great and last a lifetime.
Follicular Unit Transplantation
During the FUT procedure, a small strip of tissue is removed from the back of the head. This area is known as a “safe donor area,” or SDA, because patients do not typically lose their hair in this location. We then suture this area closed and our team divides the collected tissue into grafts. Using a microscope and specialized instruments, the hair follicles are separated into units that are transplanted to the designated areas. This may include the frontal area, mid-scalp, and crown vertex depending on the degree of hair loss.
With FUT, you will probably experience mild discomfort for a 24 hour period following the procedure. If needed, Dr. Buchwach or Dr. Goldstein can prescribe a pain medication to ease your discomfort. The FUT procedure does result in a small scar. Hairstyles that are not cropped too closely (less than one inch) effectively conceal the scar.
Recovery from the FUT procedure takes about a week. While you can return to work a day or two after the procedure, you should limit yourself to light exercise for the first few days. After approximately one week, patients can begin returning to more strenuous activity.
Follicular Unit Extraction
Today, almost all of our male patients have FUE. A significant number of females now prefer FUE as well. Rather than removing a strip of tissue, we remove the hair follicles individually. This technique is appropriate for any degree of hair loss.
The FUE procedure requires no sutures and results in no visible scarring. Patients always experience less discomfort with FUE than with FUT. Still, local anesthetic is provided during the procedure to numb the area and ensure the best possible level of comfort.
Because there is no incision or stitches, patients can return to strenuous activities much sooner. The pinpoint openings created during the procedure will heal in just a few days. Patients can typically return to work the day after their procedure and can return to their exercise routines in less than a week.
